Chapter 15 – Undiscovered Country

Sol Station

Alexi Masters

After I returned to my seat from the unexpected spacewalk, I couldn’t stop thinking about the kiss that Kyle and I almost shared. I didn’t want to kiss Kyle; I wanted to hate him, and I did for what he did to my best friend and so many others at school. But at the same time, my body betrayed me; I wanted him to kiss me. I kept trying to think of something else, anything else to get that moment out of my mind. I gave up hope of ever purging the memory and decided to just look outside the window and the empty blackness of space and hide in my shame. I turned my head to the window, but my eyes were still focused down…lost in thought. I shook my head slightly to banish the memory and looked up, hoping to see what Earth looked like from this high up. At first glance, I saw a large structure and not Earth; I forgot for a brief second that I was in space. It dawned on me quickly what I was looking at and I could only describe it in one word, “Unbelievable!”

My eyes were glued to the structure before me. The space station was massive and took up the entire field of view outside of the window. The outer ring of the station appeared to be nine to ten stories high with the same crystal windows that were on the citadel. Just to our right were large hangar bays with shuttles similar to the one we were in as well as people walking around inside. The opening to the hangars was tinted deep red, almost as if it were covered in clear plastic wrap. Surrounding the opening were various lights flashing at a steady pulse, and I figured we were probably heading to one of these. I heard Kyle as he came up behind me to look out the window. When he was near me, the memory of our earlier moment quickly returned. As he let out his initial gasp at what he saw, his warm breath hit the left side of my neck and sent chills down my body. I closed my eyes briefly and attempted to put Kyle out of my mind again. My success in that endeavor was rather limited.

The pilot flew the shuttle up over the lip of the outer ring, allowing us a better view of the top half of the station. Though the station was still under construction, the sight was no less breathtaking. The top half actually flattened out, with a small flat dome occupying the center of the structure while being surrounded by windows. There was a dip between the center structure and the outer ring separating the two, but the center structure also stood on top of a small rise and rested a few dozen feet higher than the remainder of the station. The shuttle curved back down and to the left, flying towards the hangars I’d noticed earlier.
